What is Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti marks the Sun's transit (sankranti) into Capricorn (Makara) and the start of Uttarayana — the Sun's six-month northward journey. It is one of the few Hindu festivals fixed to the solar calendar, falling around January 14 each year.

Significance

The day is considered highly auspicious for charity (daan), holy bathing, and beginning new ventures. Til-gud (sesame and jaggery) is shared as a symbol of warmth and harmony.
