The Great Night of Shiva

Maha Shivaratri is observed on the 14th night of the waning moon in the month of Phalguna. Devotees keep a night-long vigil (jagaran), fast, and worship Lord Shiva through the four praharas of the night.

Observances

• Fasting from sunrise, broken the next morning
• Abhishekam of the Shiva Linga with water, milk and honey
• Continuous chanting of Om Namah Shivaya

Spiritual significance

The still, dark night is held to be ideal for inner awareness and meditation, when devotion to Shiva is said to bear special fruit.
